Rory was born in Glasgow, Scotland. His mother, Alison, was a primary school teacher and his father David was in insurance. He is of mixed Irish and Scottish heritage. His grandfather, James, showed exceptional artistic talent as a child in the 1930s, winning a Commonwealth award for a pencil drawing of a rook. Although his grandfather's career followed a different path, his early artistic endeavors inspired Rory to the arts, where he was classically trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. As well as his work in front of the camera, he works regularly in theatre and also writes and produces for screen.
